Tomiko Itooka, a Japanese woman recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest person, has passed away at the age of 116. She died on December 29 at a care home in Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture, central Japan.

Born on May 23, 1908, in Osaka, Itooka lived a remarkable life. She was an avid volleyball player in high school and even climbed Mount Ontake, a 3,067-meter mountain, twice. During World War II, she managed the office of her husband's textile factory.

Itooka became the oldest living person in Japan in December 2023, following the death of 116-year-old Fusa Tatsumi. She was later recognized as the world's oldest person by Guinness World Records in September 2024, after the passing of 117-year-old Maria Branyas Morera.

The world's oldest person title has now been passed to 116-year-old Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas, who was born 16 days after Itooka.
