UEFA is indeed considering a major rule change to the Champions League format, potentially eliminating extra time from knockout-round matches starting from 2027. This proposed change aims to address growing concerns over fixture congestion for elite players, exacerbated by the recent expansion of the tournament and the introduction of the revamped Club World Cup. 

The idea is to settle draws after 90 minutes with penalty shootouts instead of playing extra time. This change would align with other competitions, such as the UEFA Super Cup, which has already abolished extra time. Additionally, domestic competitions like the FA Cup have also taken steps to reduce fixture congestion by scrapping replays. 

It's worth noting that UEFA's executive committee would need to ratify this proposed change, and it's still in the informal discussion stage. However, if implemented, this change would mark a significant shift in the Champions League format, which has been in place since the competition's inception in 1956.
