Troops have made some significant progress in the fight against oil theft, recovering a whopping 90,000 litres of stolen fuel and destroying 20 illegal refining sites across the Niger Delta region. This is a huge win, not just for the troops, but for the entire country, as it helps to curb the illegal activities that have been plaguing the oil industry. The operation, which took place from December 23-29, 2024, also led to the arrest of 8 suspected oil thieves.

The troops discovered a massive tarpaulin storage reservoir and a wooden boat with over 37,000 litres of stolen condensates in the Buguma general area. They also intercepted several boats and recovered a significant amount of stolen products, including 9,000 litres of illegally refined Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK). The operation was a result of a tip-off, and the troops responded effectively, leading to the discovery of the illegal refining sites and the recovery of the stolen fuel.

The General Officer Commanding, 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Jamal Abdussalam, has charged the troops to continue maintaining vigilance in the Joint Operations Area to create an enabling environment for exploration activities to thrive in the region. This is a great step towards ensuring the security of the oil industry and preventing further theft.
