Tinubu Govt Hints At Fresh Electricity Tariff Hike For Nigerians In Coming Months
According to sources within the Ministry of Power, the government is considering a review of the current electricity tariff regime, which could lead to higher prices for consumers.
The proposed tariff hike is aimed at addressing the financial challenges faced by power generation and distribution companies, which have been struggling to stay afloat due to inadequate funding and inefficient operations.
However, the move has been met with widespread criticism from Nigerians, who argue that they are already paying too much for electricity. Many have taken to social media to express their outrage, using hashtags such as #NoToTariffHike and #FixThePowerSector.
"We are tired of paying for darkness," said Lagos resident, Mrs. Funke Adebayo. "The government should focus on improving the power supply rather than increasing the tariff."
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has promised to engage with stakeholders, including consumer groups and power operators, to discuss the proposed tariff hike and its implications.
The government's decision on the electricity tariff hike is expected to be announced in the coming weeks. If approved, the new tariffs could take effect as early as April 2025
