SUDAN TEETERS ON BRINK OF CATASTROPHIC FOOD CRISIS
According to the latest report from the FAO, famine conditions have been confirmed in several areas, including Zamzam camp in North Darfur, Abu Shouk, and Al Salam camps, as well as the Western Nuba Mountains.
"The situation is catastrophic, and we urge the international community to take immediate action to prevent a humanitarian disaster," said Dr. Qu Dongyu, FAO Director-General.
The crisis is attributed to a combination of factors, including ongoing conflict, displacement, and economic hardship. The conflict has disrupted agricultural production, trade flows, and humanitarian access, leaving millions without access to basic necessities.
The FAO, World Food Programme (WFP), and UNICEF are working together to provide emergency assistance, including food, nutrition, and cash aid. However, more support is needed to address the scale of the crisis.
"We are doing everything we can to reach those in need, but we need more resources to scale up our response," said Dr. Qu.
The international community is being urged to provide immediate support to prevent a humanitarian disaster. The FAO has appealed for $150 million in emergency funding to support its response efforts.
As the situation continues to deteriorate, the people of Sudan are in desperate need of assistance. The world must act now to prevent a catastrophic food crisis.
