Samsung may soon unveil a tri-fold Galaxy phone to rival Huawei Mate XT Ultimate

A few months after Huawei unveiled the world’s first tri-fold smartphone – the Mate XT Ultimate, rumour has it that Samsung is also working on an Android-powered tri-fold Galaxy phone.

The news comes from the Korean publication The Elec, according to which, Samsung is planning to launch a new tri-fold Galaxy phone with a Huawei Mate XT Ultimate-like dual hinge design and three foldable display panels. The report goes on to say that the Galaxy trifold will measure under 10 inches when fully unfolded, which is on par with Huawei’s 10.2-inch screen.

According to the machine-translated version of the report, the publication also claims that Samsung shared its plans to make a tri-fold phone with major component manufacturers on January 13.

Samsung Electronics is also said to “slightly accelerate” the mass production of the Galaxy Fold 7 in order to secure parts for its upcoming tri-fold. Since this will be a new form factor for the company, Samsung may need more time to make the parts thinner.

While the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate has an S-shaped design where two screens fold inwards while the third one is visible from the outside, the three screens on Samsung’s foldable phone may fold inwards, protecting them from scratches.

The final design of the phone hasn’t been finalized, but it looks like Samsung plans to make only 2,00,000 units for its upcoming tri-fold Galaxy phone.

At this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, Samsung Display showcased a tri-fold smartphone prototype for the third consecutive time, so if everything goes according to plan, we might see Samsung venturing into the tri-fold territory sometime later this year.
