London, UK - As snow and ice are forecasted to hit parts of the UK, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) has issued a warning to pet owners about the dangers of salt and antifreeze to their animals.

The RSPCA is urging pet owners to take precautions to protect their pets from the toxic effects of salt and antifreeze, which can be fatal if ingested. When used to de-ice roads and walkways, salt can be easily ingested by pets, either by licking their paws or fur, or by eating the salt directly. Similarly, antifreeze, commonly used in cars, can leak onto the ground and be ingested by curious pets.

"We want to remind pet owners to be vigilant and take necessary precautions to keep their pets safe," said an RSPCA spokesperson. "Salt and antifreeze can be deadly to pets, and it's essential to take steps to prevent ingestion."

The RSPCA is advising pet owners to keep a close eye on their pets when walking them, to clean their paws thoroughly after walks, and to keep antifreeze out of reach. The organization is also recommending pet-friendly alternatives to salt, such as sand or cat litter, to de-ice walkways.

As the winter weather sets in, the RSPCA is bracing for an increase in calls related to salt and antifreeze poisoning. Last year, the organization received numerous reports of pets ingesting salt and antifreeze, resulting in serious illness and even death.

Pet owners are urged to be proactive in protecting their pets from the dangers of salt and antifreeze. If you suspect your pet has ingested salt or antifreeze, contact your veterinarian immediately.
