Redeemers varsity reacts after JAMB suspended it from law admission
The management of Redeemer's University has responded to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board's (JAMB) decision to suspend its law program for one year. The suspension, which was announced earlier this week, has sparked concerns among prospective students and stakeholders of the university.
According to a statement released by the university's management, the suspension was due to the Council for Legal Education's (CLE) decision to penalize the institution for commencing its law program in 2017 without proper approval. The university explained that although it currently has full accreditation from both the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the CLE to run an undergraduate law program, the suspension will prevent new students from being admitted into the program for the 2025/2026 academic session.
The university's management assured its students and stakeholders that existing students in the law program will be allowed to continue their studies, and that the institution will comply with the penalty imposed by the CLE. "We understand the concerns of our students and stakeholders, and we want to assure them that we are working towards resolving the issues that led to the suspension," the statement read.
The suspension of Redeemer's University's law program is not an isolated incident, as seven other universities have also had their law programs suspended by JAMB for similar reasons. The affected universities include Benson Idahosa University, Ajayi Crowther University, and Joseph Ayo Babalola University, among others.
The development has sparked concerns among education stakeholders, who have called on the relevant authorities to address the issues that led to the suspension. "The suspension of these law programs is a setback for the education sector, and it highlights the need for greater scrutiny and oversight of university programs," said a spokesperson for the Nigerian Bar Association.
Redeemer's University has assured its students and stakeholders that it will work towards resolving the issues that led to the suspension, and that it will continue to provide quality education to its students. The university's management has also appealed to prospective students to consider other programs offered by the institution, which are not affected by the suspension.
The suspension of Redeemer's University's law program is a reminder of the importance of proper accreditation and approval for university programs. It also highlights the need for greater transparency and accountability in the education sector, to ensure that students receive quality education that meets international standards.
