Over 12,000 cartons of chicken broth sold at Walmart recalled in 9 states
More than 2,000 cases — or 12,000 cartons — of chicken broth sold at Walmart have been recalled in nine states due to potential packaging issues that could cause the product to spoil.
The product was sold in family-sized, 48-ounce packaging under the name Great Value Chicken Broth, according to a notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The broth is sold in paper cartons that have potential for “packaging failures that could compromise the sterility of the product, resulting in spoilage,” per the FDA.
The 2,023 cases are being voluntarily recalled by the Canadian company Tree House Foods, Inc., located in Oak Brook, British Columbia. The recalled broth was sold in 242 Walmart locations in nine states: Tennessee, Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Georgia, Missouri, Mississippi and Oklahoma.
“The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority,” Walmart said in a statement to TODAY.com. “As soon as we were made aware of the issue, we took action to remove all impacted (products) from … select, impacted stores. We are continuing to work with the supplier to investigate.”
The recall was initiated on Dec. 11 and the affected products were removed from the shelves at the 242 affected Walmart locations by the end of December, according to a Walmart spokesperson.
Customers are urged to discard the affected products. They can get a refund by contacting their local Walmart location and showing a receipt, photo or the actual product, according to the spokesperson.
