
Nurse dies as Uganda confirms new Ebola outbreak
The Ministry of Health in Uganda declared the outbreak after three national reference laboratories confirmed the case. So far, 45 contacts have been identified, including 34 healthcare workers and 11 family members, who are being monitored for symptoms.
This is not the first time Uganda has dealt with an outbreak of Sudan virus disease. The country has experienced five previous outbreaks, with the most recent one occurring in September 2022 and ending in January 2023, resulting in 164 cases and 77 deaths ² ³.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is supporting Uganda's response to the outbreak, including facilitating access to a candidate vaccine. The first 2,160 doses of the vaccine are already in Kampala, and will be offered to those at high risk, including healthcare workers and family members of the deceased nurse.
