Nigeria has become the first African country to receive mpox vaccines outside of clinical trials, marking a significant milestone in the fight against the disease. The country received 10,000 doses of the Jynneos vaccine, manufactured by Bavarian Nordic and donated by the United States government.

The vaccine will be administered in a two-dose schedule to 5,000 individuals most at risk of mpox, including close contacts of confirmed cases and frontline healthcare workers. The vaccination exercise will primarily target the five states with recorded cases, with provisions for reactive vaccination in other states as needed.

Nigeria's preparedness and robust vaccination plan ensured its place at the forefront of receiving these doses. The country has confirmed 40 cases of mpox, with no deaths reported.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has welcomed the development, with Matshidiso Moeti, WHO regional director for Africa, stating that the delivery of vaccines signifies "a clear demonstration of international solidarity in the face of global public health emergencies".

The vaccine donation is part of a larger effort to combat the mpox outbreak in Africa. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is expected to receive 65,000 doses of the vaccine, with 50,000 doses donated by the US and 15,000 doses provided by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.
