A diplomatic row has erupted between Niger and Nigeria after Niger's President, Mohamed Bazoum, accused Nigeria of sponsoring terrorism in the West African region.

In a recent interview with a French news outlet, President Bazoum alleged that Nigeria was providing financial and logistical support to terrorist groups operating in the Sahel region, including Niger.

Nigeria's presidency has swiftly denied the allegations, describing them as "unfortunate and unsubstantiated." A statement released by the presidency emphasized Nigeria's commitment to regional security and its efforts to combat terrorism.

"Nigeria has been at the forefront of regional efforts to combat terrorism and insecurity," the statement read. "We will not be distracted by baseless allegations."

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has also reacted to the allegations, calling for calm and restraint. In a statement, ECOWAS Commission President, Omar Touray, encouraged both countries to engage in dialogue to resolve their differences.

"ECOWAS is concerned about the allegations and counter-allegations between Niger and Nigeria," the statement read. "We urge both countries to engage in constructive dialogue to resolve their differences."

The allegations have sparked concerns about regional stability and the fight against terrorism in the Sahel. The Sahel region has been plagued by terrorist attacks, and regional cooperation is crucial to combating the threat.

Analysts say the allegations could undermine regional efforts to combat terrorism and create tensions between Niger and Nigeria, both key players in regional security initiatives.

The diplomatic row is expected to continue, with both countries maintaining their positions. ECOWAS and other regional organizations will likely play a key role in mediating the dispute and promoting regional stability.
