The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made a significant breakthrough in its fight against drug trafficking, arresting two notorious drug kingpins who attempted to smuggle heroin into Nigeria through the Lagos and Port Harcourt airports.

The first suspect, Onyekwonike Elochuckwu Sylvanus, 30, was arrested at the Port Harcourt airport on February 2, 2025, after arriving from Doha via Abuja. He was found to have ingested 62 wraps of heroin, weighing 1.348 kilograms, which he expelled in five excretions.

The second suspect, James Herbert Chinoso, 48, was apprehended at the Lagos airport on February 1, 2025, upon his arrival from Madagascar via Addis Ababa. He was discovered to have swallowed 63 wraps of heroin, weighing 909 grams ¹.

Both suspects claimed to have turned to drug trafficking after their businesses failed. Onyekwonike, who uses dual identities, alternates between his Nigerian and Sierra Leonean passports to facilitate his cross-border movements. James, on the other hand, had traveled to Madagascar and returned via Addis Ababa after spending a week.

These arrests are a testament to the NDLEA's relentless efforts to combat drug trafficking in Nigeria. Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended the officers and men involved in the operation, acknowledging their operational successes and balanced approach to drug supply reduction and demand reduction efforts.
