Educators in Nigeria are urging the Federal Government to modernize the curriculum and prioritize education in 2025. This call comes as the government is set to roll out a new curriculum for basic education starting this month, January 2025.

The new curriculum aims to equip students with 21st-century skills, including basic digital literacy, information technology, and vocational skills such as building and construction, plumbing, and hospitality. This is a significant shift from the existing 6:3:3:4 education system, which also incorporated skills training but failed to properly implement it.

The Federal Ministry of Education has emphasized the importance of refining the curriculum to meet the needs of the 21st century. The new curriculum is designed to be competency-based, digitally aligned, and incorporate Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) methodologies.

While the government's efforts to modernize the curriculum are commendable, educators are pushing for more to be done to prioritize education in 2025. This includes increasing funding for education, improving infrastructure, and providing better support for teachers.
