Thousands of women who suffered injuries from pelvic mesh implants are still waiting for financial compensation, a year after a major report called for urgent action ¹. The report, led by Patient Safety Commissioner Dr. Henrietta Hughes, recommended providing redress to victims, citing the "thousands of lives destroyed" by the implants.

Many women experienced severe complications, including permanent pain, inability to walk or work, and sexual dysfunction, after undergoing surgery to treat incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse ¹. Despite the government's assurance that they are "fully focused" on supporting patients and preventing harm, victims are growing impatient.

Dr. Hughes emphasized that the lack of compensation is "an injustice" and urged the government to act immediately ¹. Health Minister Baroness Gillian Merron met with affected women before Christmas and promised to provide an update to the patient safety commissioner soon.

Meanwhile, some women have already received undisclosed payouts from three mesh manufacturers: Bard, Boston Scientific, and Johnson & Johnson. However, many more are still awaiting compensation and support.
