The Heavy Duty and Haulage Transport Association of Nigeria, Kogi State Chapter, has called on the state government to support tackling illegal taxation.

Speaking at a press conference in Lokoja on Tuesday, the state chairman of HDHTAN, Trust Chukwuma, highlighted the association’s mandate, activities, and operational scope.

“We will also address key issues affecting the transportation and haulage sector in Kogi State, including multiple taxation, insecurity, and other man-made problems.

“Our association is committed to promoting the welfare of Kogites, ensuring the safety and security of heavy-duty vehicles—especially on highways—and supporting the economic development of Kogi State.

“We recognise the vital role the transportation sector plays in the economic growth and development of Kogi State. As such, we are committed to working with the Kogi State Government, local governments, and other stakeholders to create a conducive environment for Kogites,” he said.

Chukwuma explained that the association had achieved notable milestones, including intelligence sharing, truck monitoring, prevention of illicit activities, and whistleblowing since its inception.

He stressed that these efforts had helped prevent the diversion of goods intended for Kogi State, monitor truck use for illegal activities, and report crimes such as terrorism, kidnapping, and human trafficking.

“Unfortunately, we have been made aware of incidents involving miscreants impersonating HDHTAN and engaging in illegal taxation. We strongly condemn these actions and urge the public to remain vigilant.

“We are collaborating with the relevant authorities to bring these perpetrators to justice. A particular case involves one Mr Aminu Salami, a suspended HDHTAN personnel, who has been falsely representing the association and extorting unsuspecting members of the public.

“We urge the public to report any suspicious activities to HDHTAN or nearby security agencies,” he said.

The Kogi HDHTAN chairman expressed appreciation to Governor Ahmed Ododo and his administration for their efforts in improving the lives of Kogites despite the nation’s economic challenges.

He also commended the governor’s dedication to fostering a business-friendly environment and pledged the association’s support for his administration.

Chukwuma further appealed for support from local governments and the Kogi State Internal Revenue Service in achieving HDHTAN’s objectives.

“We recognise and respect the roles of these agencies and have no intention of taking over their duties. Our aim is to complement their efforts and put an end to multiple and illegal taxation on our members.

“This will contribute to the state’s economic growth and development. As the yuletide season approaches, HDHTAN remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of the transportation sector.

“We are working tirelessly to ensure our roads are safe and secure for all users. We urge all well-meaning Kogites to join us in rejecting illegal taxation.

“Our ultimate goal is to reduce the cost of food items and alleviate the economic burden on citizens. Moving forward, our actions will reflect our commitment to maintaining order on Kogi State highways.

“We have already begun this process. A special task force visited Kabba (Kogi West) over the weekend. Our collaboration with the Inspector General of Police’s task force and the support from KGIRS are yielding positive results.

“We are committed to transparency and accountability in all our operations, which we believe are essential for building trust with our members and the public.

“We will continue to work tirelessly to promote the welfare of Kogites and ensure that the transportation sector and haulage activities in Kogi State are safe, efficient, and contribute meaningfully to the state’s economic growth and development,” Chukwuma said
