Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has officially recognized Asari Dokubo as a traditional ruler, specifically as the Amanyanabo of Torusarama Piri in Degema local government area. This move has sparked mixed reactions, with some criticizing the governor's decision to appoint a former militant leader to a traditional position.

Asari Dokubo was presented with a certificate and staff of office alongside three other new traditional rulers: HRM Winston Odize Alamina Oputibeya XII, HRM Eze Noble Friday Uwo, and HRH Prince Ike Ehie. Governor Fubara urged the new traditional rulers to see their positions as a call to service and responsibility, rather than personal aggrandizement.

The governor's decision has been met with skepticism by some, who question the moral implications of appointing a former militant leader to a traditional position. Others see it as a strategic move to consolidate power and secure support from key stakeholders in the state.
