FG to roll out 7m smart meters in 2025

The Federal Government is set to roll out 7 million prepaid smart meters nationwide starting this year, 2025. This initiative is part of the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI), aimed at putting an end to estimated billing and ensuring transparency in electricity charges ¹.

The rollout of these smart meters is expected to improve revenue collection across the power sector and attract investments needed to strengthen Nigeria's power infrastructure. Additionally, it will give consumers confidence in what they are paying for, as they will have a clear record of their electricity consumption.

This move is also part of the government's efforts to address the challenges facing the power sector, including the settlement of legacy debts owed to power generation companies and the reduction of costs for alternative power generation.
