The Federal Government has announced the scrapping of all Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary Schools in the country and introduced a compulsory 12-year uninterrupted basic education model after which a Nigerian child can aspire to higher education.

With this development, the Nigerian Government is seeking the abolition of 6-3-3-4 education system and replacing it with 12-4.

This is even as it has sought the approval of the National Council on Education to officially adopt 16 years as the minimum entry age requirement into the country’s tertiary institutions.

This means that students will now complete their basic education without any divisions, and then advance to higher education. The government has also proposed setting the minimum age for university admission at 16.

The new model aims to improve education quality, reduce school dropout rates, and remove financial barriers that prevent students from completing their studies. It'll also introduce a standardized curriculum nationwide, with early exposure to vocational and entrepreneurial skills.

According to Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa, this reform will align Nigeria's education system with international standards, fostering better educational outcomes and global competitiveness

Some key benefits of this new model include:

Improved Education Quality: A standardized curriculum and uninterrupted learning experience will help students build a strong academic foundation.
Reduced Dropout Rates: By removing financial barriers and providing a continuous learning experience, students will be more likely to complete their studies.
Increased Global Competitiveness: Aligning Nigeria's education system with international standards will help students compete globally.
Economic and Social Impact: Educated youth will contribute significantly to national development, reducing child labor and other social vices.
