Widows of fallen heroes in Gombe State have pleaded with the state government to introduce empowerment initiatives that will support them financially, especially in the face of the ravaging hardship.

Salome Titus, the Gombe State Coordinator of the Military Widows Association, who lost her husband, late Captain Ishaya Titus (LOST HUSBAND TO WHAT?) emphasised the challenges they face.

She made this call in an interview with Arewa PUNCH shortly after the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration and Wreath Laying event at Pantami Township Stadium, Gombe.

She said, “Life is not easy when you are two, talk less of when you are the only one. Since the demise of my husband only God has been faithful to me and the children despite the daily challenges we are forced to grapple with because of his sudden and untimely death in the cause of his discharge of his duties to the nation. But we are still surviving.”

Titus highlighted the difficulties of being a widow, saying, “As a widow, you are saddled with the challenge of paying school fees, health needs when they are sick, feeding challenge, especially in this economic situation.”

She also lamented the lack of support from authorities, stating, “There are widows who have not gotten their husband’s benefits. Some whose husbands died since 2011 are yet to get their benefits, especially insurance payment,” she disclosed.

The widows’ group coordinator thus called on the government to provide assistance in securing their late husbands’ benefits and introducing empowerment initiatives.

Titus further appealed, “Government should assist widows secure their husbands’ benefits. They should help introduce initiatives and empowerment programmes that will impact our members. That is the general consensus mandated me by other widows to demand from the government,” she noted.
