Experts warn of threat to global health as US freezes overseas aid
Africa is particularly vulnerable, with the US aid freeze threatening the lives of people across the continent and efforts to contain disease outbreaks. The head of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Jean Kaseya, has written to the US Secretary of State, highlighting the alarming consequences of the aid freeze.
The freeze has also crippled global efforts to relieve hunger, with 500,000 tons of US food aid in limbo . This has severe implications for countries like Sudan, where almost 30,000 metric tons of food aid are stuck in warehouses, putting the lives of millions of people at risk.
Furthermore, the shutdown of the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) has eliminated a critical source of guidance for aid organizations, making it even more challenging to respond to hunger crises.
The situation is dire, and experts are urging the US government to lift the aid freeze to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe.
