Experts advocate data-driven approach to tackle food security
The continent is home to 20.2% of the world's undernourished population, with 250 million people facing hunger. Despite progress in digital technologies, the agricultural sector has not fully benefited from these advancements.
"Africa has the potential to feed itself, but we need to harness the power of data and digital technologies to drive agricultural productivity, efficiency, and sustainability," said Dr. Agnes Kalibata, President of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA).
The experts identified several key areas where a data-driven approach can make a significant impact:
1. Digital Agriculture: Leveraging technologies like smartphones, WhatsApp, and Facebook to promote food accessibility and utilization.
2. Data-Driven Decision Making: Analyzing data to inform decisions on food production, storage, transportation, and marketing.
3. Supply Chain Optimization: Implementing efficient supply chain management systems to reduce food waste and improve food availability.
"A data-driven approach can help us identify areas of inefficiency, optimize resource allocation, and make informed decisions to drive agricultural growth and food security," said Dr. Ousmane Badiane, Executive Chair of the Africa Food Security Leadership Dialogue.
The experts also highlighted the need to address the digital divide in Africa, particularly among women farmers, who make up about 50% of the agricultural workforce.
"Women farmers are critical to Africa's food security, but they have limited access to digital technologies due to factors like poor education, cultural beliefs, and low digital skills," said Ms. Estherine Fotabong, Director of the African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) program.
The gathering concluded with a call to action for governments, private sector companies, and development organizations to invest in data-driven initiatives that can help Africa achieve sustainable food security.
By adopting a data-driven approach, Africa can unlock its agricultural potential, reduce hunger, and ensure a food-secure future for its growing population.
