Court sentences four to death over armed robbery in Ekiti
The convicts, Tope Ojo, 37; Temitope Aderopo, 37; Oyedele Oluwatobi, 27; and Damilola Christopher, 30, were found guilty of robbing four victims at Ilutitun Street, Ikere Ekiti, on August 3, 2021.
According to the prosecution, the defendants stormed the victims' residence, armed with dangerous weapons, and made away with laptops, phones, power banks, jewelry, a sound system, and N136,000 in cash.
One of the victims, Idowu Oluwadamilola, testified that she was severely beaten and forced to hand over her belongings during the robbery.
Justice Lekan Olatawura, who presided over the case, noted that the defendants had individually confessed to the robbery and that the prosecution had proved their guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
In his judgment, Justice Olatawura sentenced the four defendants to death by hanging, stating that the severity of the punishment was necessary to serve as a deterrent to others.
The fifth defendant, Ekundayo Ajiboye, was discharged and acquitted due to lack of evidence linking him to the crime.
The judgment has been hailed as a victory for justice and a warning to would-be criminals in Ekiti State.
