Chinese hackers have breached the US Treasury Department's systems in a major cybersecurity incident. The hackers, suspected to be state-sponsored, gained access to the Treasury's systems through a third-party cybersecurity vendor, BeyondTrust. They compromised a key used by the vendor to secure a cloud-based service, allowing them to remotely access certain Treasury Department workstations and steal unclassified documents.

The breach occurred earlier this month, with BeyondTrust first spotting suspicious activity on December 2. The company informed the Treasury Department about the attack on December 8. The incident is being treated as a "major cybersecurity incident" due to the suspected involvement of an advanced persistent threat (APT) group.

China has denied any involvement in the breach, calling it a "smear attack" without factual basis. The US Treasury Department is investigating the incident along with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the FBI.
